How to Perform Umrah: A Step-by-Step Overview

Umrah consists of a small number of well-known rites performed in and around the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. This overview explains the sequence at a high level so you can plan with confidence. It is not a substitute for learning the details from a qualified scholar or a trusted book of fiqh.

Search packages1. Ihram and intention (niyyah)
Umrah begins by entering the state of ihram at or before the designated miqat, making the intention for Umrah, and reciting the talbiyah. Men wear the two unstitched white garments; women wear ordinary modest clothing. Certain actions are restricted while in ihram.
2. Tawaf around the Kaaba
On reaching the Masjid al-Haram, pilgrims perform tawaf — seven circuits around the Kaaba — followed by two units of prayer, ideally near the Maqam Ibrahim.
3. Sa'i between Safa and Marwah
Pilgrims then perform sa'i: walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, now enclosed within the mosque.
4. Halq or taqsir
Umrah is completed by shaving (halq) or trimming (taqsir) the hair, after which the state of ihram ends. Many pilgrims also visit Madinah and the Prophet's Mosque before or after Umrah, though that visit is separate from the Umrah rites.
